Fighting the bacteria!

On Monday morning I got the result of the urine culture confirming the presence of a bacteria that attacked my princess again :-( and a gut bacteria, Enterococcus faecalis.

I was worried because the antibiogram did not indicate that the bacteria was sensitive to cephalexin, the antibiotic she was taking since Saturday. But Dr. Luiza told me to make a new exam to see if the infection was decreasing, as she found the antibiogram was strange, suggesting very strong antibiotics for children.
On Monday afternoon we repeated the same test and the result indicated that the infection is regressing, the antibiotic is fighting this evil bacteria!

She remains taking cephalexin for 10 days, thankfully her belly is much better with the new diet, I hope these days of treatment are not sufficient to sensitize her stomach - she always takes the medicine after eating.
Thank God she remains well, without pain, calm and happy!

Thanks for all the prayers!

New suspects, and more antibiotics

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalms 23:1-6

Our little princess is suspected of a new urinary tract infection: (

Leukocyturia increasing in two urine tests this week. Wednesday there were 64 000 leukocytes and Friday 256 000, plus positive nitrite, which are strong evidence of infection. But there was no growth of bacteria in the 1st test to make sure there is an infection and to know what the most appropriate antibiotics to treat it.

We started with cephalexin today and await the result of urine culture. Fortunately she is very quiet, eating and sleeping well - does not seem to be in pain. But therein lies the danger, because she had other asymptomatic infections that eventually evolved to sepsis. That's all we do not want. Dr. Luiza is guiding us.

I ask for prayers, please, so that she evolves well and we need not go to the hospital. May God bring to light all the things we need to know and protect her from all evil. In Jesus' name, Amen.

There is no need to fear

But now, this is what the LORD says — he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.
Isaiah 43:1-5

Thank God our little princess is great! It's been over ten days since she's home again, and the days are quiet. She is eating very well, better than before, the intestine returned to work correctly and the inhalations are finished.

Coming home is that we realize how much we were very tired after 16 days of hospitalization, because besides the great emotional stress, we had very little and bad sleep all this time. For now, we are slowly returning to our routine.
We got plenty of rest at home and could stroll a few times. Some days have been rainy, others cloudy and windy. But once we see a little sunshine, we went down to stroll and Vitoria liked to go out and feel the sun, the wind, the noises from the street... What a gift from God to live it all again, walking "wireless" (without need of feeding tube or oxygen), eating, playing, bathing, sleeping close to each other! She was even able to walk on her skate last Sunday, she made a lot of effort and was able to walk down the aisle, so beautiful!

She is having hypothermia sometimes, I think it is because of this crazy weather (it was supposed to be hot at this point of November over here!). She is also still angry with her teeth. The two molars (the same of last month!) have not come out even half from the gums. Because of this I scheduled an appointment with a dentist for her, to see what can be done to help these teeth to grow.

On Tuesday we went to physiotherapy! Everybody there were very happy to see that Vitoria has recovered. She is great, a little stiff in the movements of legs, but she is in the same old way, raising her head, holding the trunk for a few seconds, complaining and fighting in the moment to stretch the right foot... this foot worsened somewhat, since she spent several days sleeping without her orthoses in hospital, and that foot has always a tendency to warp back in. But with enough stretch it gets better again.

Then we went to her pediatrician. She was so happy to see that Vitoria is great. The doctor stopped the medication for stomach (motilium and label) because she no longer needs these medications and she is having too much gas, perhaps because of them. So, thank God now our girl do not need to take any more medicines!

Fortunately her pediatrician is also a pediatric nephrologist and she asked two complex tests to investigate the cause of recurrent urinary tract infections that Vitoria has had, and whose last evolved quietly and quickly led to septicemia that was so painful for our Vitoria and all of us. She will have to do a complete urodynamic study and voiding cystourethrography. She asked to do these tests in a hospital and not in the laboratory. Also prescribed an antibiotic for Vitoria for 7 days, starting 3 days before the exams and ending three days after, as the exams are invasive, with passage of a probe, and there is a risk of getting an infection during the procedure itself. Because of this she will have to do an urine test a few days before and another urine test a few days later to make sure that no bacteria took advantage of the situation.

Urinary infections can have various causes. In Vitoria's case, we have to investigate whether it is of neurological origin, for example, by a poor command of the brain, bladder can retain an last bit of urine instead of being completely empty, favoring the growth of bacteria, or if there is some small malformation in any of the urinary channel (apparently everything looks normal on ultrasound). Depending on the results there are medications that can help strengthen the bladder, there are also exercises that can strengthen the muscles used to urinate. A doctor who served us in hospital also explained that children with neurological disorders, such as Vitoria, have an overall relaxation of the muscles (hypotonia), and this may undermine the process of elimination of urine and promote infections.

But we have to do this research to find out, because there are many children who have urinary infections without having any problem as mentioned above.

Anyway, whatever it is, we know that, like everything has always been, our hope is in God who created her and who has control of each beautiful hair of her head... Sometimes I get worried about the present and the future, there are so many things that we have no control!

But stopping to think about everything we have experienced, God has always reminded me that we have walked on water, looking for Him and for Him being sustained. And we want to continue walking with Him, an step at a time, over the waters of his powerful presence. There is no need to fear.

Please keep on praying!

Dear friends,

Our precious Vitoria is stable - how I would like to say she is pretty well, but how important is to thank she is slowly overcoming huge challenges.

She had an urinary infection caused by a bacteria that began attacking her body and settled in the lungs, her body went into septic shock - she went to the ICU very serious, very, very close to death because due to shock her circulation was poor and doctors could not find a venous access for starting medication.

We lived days of extreme anxiety, panic and despair seeing her suffer, intubated, sedated and receiving many drugs. We prayed and prayed but it was impossible to have peace seeing her so bad, pale and prostrate.

The infection is already being controlled, and now her body is slowly returning to equilibrium. Her blood sugar was very decompensated, a consequence of generalized infection, and had to receive insuline. She needs to be aspirated because of pneumonia and was very agitated, so we asked that she could be kept sedated.

This morning the doctor on duty said again that her condition is extremely serious and there are still risks.
We know this very well and during all these days we have been in many tears and anxiety.

But now, on the third day of antibiotic she is much better, she is no longer sedated and is next to leave the respirator! The medications that are helping to pressure and circulation are also slowly being reduced. She is having a good answer to all treatment and now in afternoon the doctor said everything indicates next days will be much calmer and better for her.

The surgeon who put the central catheter also evaluated her today and said that she improved 500%!

Today she could take a bed bath with soap and water and was much quieter! What a relief to see her feeling better! We can only be at peace seeing that she is fine

We thank immensely all prayers and we keep on asking God the best for our precious beloved Vitoria.

Prayers for Vitoria

I ask all our friends around the world that have followed with caring the story of our precious little girl Vitoria that pray for her. On thursday at 5 am she woke up crying a lot and after some time we realized she was cyanotic (face and hands were getting purple). We took her to hospital and an urinary infection was seen. She was hospitalized but they could not puncture a venous access to give her medications even after several attempts.

On evening we realized she was getting really bad and so pediatricians have found that she was in a septic shock. Blood flow was focused to vital organs greatly reducing the peripheral circulation and impeding the puncture of a venous access. She went to ICU in a very serious condition and we went through hours of great anxiety and prayer that something could be done for her.

They called a surgeon to make a central catheter and finally she could then receive serum and antibiotics. They found that the bacteria also reached the lungs causing pneumonia in only a few hours.

She had to be intubated and sedated and receiving multiple medications. Thank God the pneumonia is already regressing and she had an amazing surprisingly response in just 24 hours of antibiotics - the answer usually comes only after 48 hours of treatment. Now her condition is stable, but she is still so impaired and needing all possible support until her body can fight off infection.

We talked to her saying how much we love her and would like to keep on taking care of her here on earth, and prayed God how much we love her and want so much that she can live and spend more unforgetable days with us. She belongs to Him and He is in control of her life.

She is in an very good hospital in a room were we can spend 24 hours a day with her.
It's been very painful to see her so weak since three days ago she was at home so well.

We remain in constant prayer.
